Frequently asked questions

Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about Where Is My Data.

Where Is My Data is a platform designed to help you manage and track your data deletion requests. WMD's features can be combined with the extension available for Chrome and Firefox. With WMD, you can detect and list sites that may hold data about you and quickly send grouped deletion requests.

The WMD extension is compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Brave and Vivaldi. You can download it from the Mozilla store for Firefox and from the Chrome store for all other browsers.

It is difficult to determine exactly where your data is located in the huge information network that the Internet constitutes, but it is possible to make a realistic estimate using different methods. WMD offers five of them:

History Scan :
This feature allows you to periodically analyze your browser history in order to extract a list of websites where data may potentially have been submitted.

Cookies Scan :
This feature allows you to periodically analyze the cookies stored in your browser to identify the various providers and data brokers referenced in them, and determine which ones may potentially hold data about you.

Emails Scan :
You can analyze each page of your mailbox to extract the list of domains that have written to you. The analysis is done automatically, however, you must to browse through the pages of your mailbox for an extraction to start. You must also activate the live mode and the email analysis. Works with Gmail, Outlook and Proton.

Live Mode :
Live Mode analyzes the pages you visit in real time to identify elements that may indicate that information is being submitted. It examines elements present on web pages to detect forms and certain events, such as clicks.

Advanced Live Mode :
Advanced Live Mode monitors network requests made by the pages you visit. This approach improves detection reliability and helps reduce false positives.

Please note that none of the data you enter into web pages is analyzed or stored by the extension. WMD's detection methods rely solely on elements and information natively present on the web pages you visit, as well as on the technical communications required for their operation.

Live Mode can be enabled or disabled at any time.

Note that WMD does not claim to find all the sites to which you have transmitted your data. Its objective is to help you reduce your exposure by identifying the services likely to hold your information and by allowing you to group your deletion requests efficiently and quickly. By reducing the number of platforms on which your data is present, you also reduce the opportunities for it to be exposed or compromised during a data leak.

Once websites and domains have been identified and grouped using the different methods described above, WMD allows you to generate ready-to-use templates to send massive requests for access to your data or deletion requests.

For each selected group of domains, WMD generates a template containing the contact email addresses associated with the relevant services. You can simply copy these addresses into the recipient field when creating a new email from your mailbox.

WMD also generates an appropriate subject line and email body based on your situation. Templates are automatically translated and can take into account the location of the company, your country of residence, and the applicable legislation, including the GDPR and local data protection regulations.

Manually adding domains :
If you have not installed the extension, or if it is not compatible with your browser, you can also add your domains manually through the WMD website. Simply enter or paste a list of domain names into the dedicated section and start generating your data deletion request templates.
If you have installed the extension, but do not want to synchronize it with the site, you can download your site/domain lists in the format .txt from the extension and copy the block of domains separated by a comma to paste it manually on the site in order to generate templates.

This method can also be used when you have extracted your domains directly from your mailbox through the WMD website. In this case, the list of identified domains is sent to the same email address used for the analysis. You can then copy the list and paste it into the manual domain entry section of the website to generate your deletion request templates.

Finally, if you are using the extension but have not enabled synchronization with the WMD website, you can export your domain list from the extension as a TXT file. You can then copy the domains contained in the file and add them manually to the website, as described above.

« Detected field » indicates that an element that can allow data to be sent has been detected on a page that you have visited.

« Detected entity » means that one or more vendors and / or data brokers have been detected in your cookies without a strong indicator of data transmission.

« Likely transmission » indicates strong signals suggesting that data may have been transmitted

« To check » means that the website requires manual verification on your part.

Please note that these different statuses do not provide conclusive evidence that any data transmission has actually occurred. They are indicators of the likelihood of data being transmitted and do not guarantee that your data has been shared.

WMD operates entirely locally. As a result, data concerning you is not transmitted to our servers or to any third-party service.

When you use the WMD extension, your data is processed directly within your browser. When you open the web interface, information is retrieved and displayed from the data stored locally by the extension. Therefore, under normal operation, no data is transmitted between the WMD extension and any remote server.

The website does not collect, store, or sell any personal data relating to you.

In certain cases, such as when you request an email analysis or a data deletion through the website, strictly necessary information, such as your email address, may temporarily pass through our servers. This information is encrypted and is not associated with any sensitive data that could be used to identify you or reconstruct your identity. It is retained only for as long as necessary to process your request. For more details, You can consult our privacy policy.
